Itching Ears Theology

Introduction to Itching Ears Theology from the Falling Away passage
of II Timothy 4:3,4, and from the "holy priesthood" of I Peter 2:4-10.

"For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine;
but out of their own WANTS because they have ITCHING EARS,
they heap up to themselves teachers with itching ears, turn away
from the truth and be turned aside to fables."  (II Timothy 4:3,4)

NOTE:  Sorry there is no easy way to say that "promoters of new
{after 1830}, novel and spectacular itching ears theology are motivated
by their own desires or wants" according to the verse of the Bible; and
this is true no matter of what high regard we may have for them in
denominational and church history.  There is no other way to explain,
except also with the addition of bad hermeneutics, how such good
preachers and teachers can go so far down the itching ears road.  It is
exceptional hard for those with the highest academic credentials, even
like the rich, to avoid those wants turning into the lusts of the forbidden
"pride of life" of I John 2:15-17.  When you get an elite group of them
together like at the famous Niagara Bible conference, they tend to
ignore all other "gifts"  in the total church body except those of their
own little group; and for their own self-glorification they form a school
to make disciples after themselves as Scofield did with a seminary in
1924.  It is not that we do not appreciate the gifts that men like W.B.
Riley, Dwight L Moody, John R Rice, Lester Rolloff and other
fundamentalists obviously had; and even if you chose to call them the
head gift, that does not justify the neglect of the other major organs of
the church body.  According to I Corinthians 12, the Holy Spirit just
does not give all His gifts to one man or one group of men.  Of the 9
gifts of the Spirit listed in that famous chapter, which one would you
say was obvious for the fundamentalists.  Up to a point they were
certainly good on conservatism with the Bible, outstanding preachers,
then an now, and their knowledge of theology if not of the Bible has
been admirable.  Perhaps it would be easier to guess which ones the
history of this movement did not exhibit, perhaps complete and
accurate wisdom and knowledge.  At least they manifested the wrong
kind of knowledge and wisdom.
Perhaps the lesson of this for us is both not to be enamored with the
obvious exhibition of one gift, like communication or preaching; and
then to chose very wisely those we select as our teachers, particularly
in eschatology.  My goodness, Ray Summers and J. D. McDowell,
and Bernard Ramm obviously had the gifts of wisdom and knowledge
on last things and hermeneutics, stick with them!

political control of the SBC now strive for doctrinal control have to
